Allow at least six weeks from the day you lodge and pay for a routine Australian passport (complex applications, such as a child's without full parental consent, can take longer), so lodge more than six weeks before the summer holidays begin or, if you're eligible, pay for Fast Track or Priority.
How long does a passport take for a trip at the start of the summer holidays?

To fly out on the first day of the NSW summer school holidays, a routine passport application has to be lodged by Friday 6 November 2026. That date leaves no margin at all. Complex applications, such as a child's without full parental consent, fall outside the six-week guide and need longer.
Here is the working. NSW summer holidays start Friday 18 December 2026 in the Eastern division. The Australian Passport Office's advice is to allow a minimum of 6 weeks on routine processing, and the 6 weeks starts when you lodge and pay. Count back 42 days from Friday 18 December and you land on Friday 6 November.
If you lodge on that Friday, your passport could arrive the day you fly, or it could arrive later. Our advice at Travel Times is to treat 6 November as the last routine date, not the plan. Every week you lodge before it is a week of buffer.
How reliable is six weeks? As at September 2026, above 97% of travel documents were available within 6 weeks. "Available" means delivered, delivery attempted, or advised as available for collection. The office's own target is 95% of travel documents available within 6 weeks. Both are performance figures, so a small share of applications takes longer. Smartraveller says the same thing plainly: "most passport applications are processed in well under 6 weeks, some do take longer", including first-time adult and child passports.
Families with school-age children have one more date to weigh. NSW Term 4 ends on 17 December 2026, and the summer break runs to Wednesday 27 January 2027 in the Eastern division and Wednesday 3 February in the Western division. A trip later in the break gives you more room.
Already past 6 November? Routine processing can no longer be counted on for a departure on the first day of the holidays. The faster services in the section below are where to look.
What happens to your application in those six weeks

Six weeks sounds like a single wait, but it is three legs. The routine service allows up to 5 business days to reach the office, up to 20 business days to process, and up to 5 business days to post.
That adds up to 30 business days, or six working weeks. Counting Monday to Friday, lodging on Friday 6 November puts the 30th business day on Friday 18 December. The calendar count and the business-day count meet on the same Friday.
The last leg is the one people forget. Once sent, the passport goes by Registered Post and should arrive in about a week.
You can skip the post. You can collect from a passport office instead, but ask for that when you lodge (asking later is only for exceptional circumstances). You can't collect from a post office.
Missed the routine date? Fast Track and Priority compared
| Service | End to end | Stages (business days) | Extra cost (checked October 2026) | Who can't use it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Routine | up to 6 weeks; complex applications, such as a child's without full parental consent, can take longer | up to 5 + up to 20 + up to 5 | standard fee only | not applicable |
| Fast Track | up to 14 business days | up to 4 + 5 + up to 5 | standard fee + $107 | applying from outside Australia, difficulty proving identity, child application without full parental consent, 2 or more passports lost or stolen in the last 5 years |
| Priority | up to 11 business days | up to 4 + 2 + up to 5 | standard fee + $308 | same exclusions as Fast Track |
| Standard fees as of 1 January 2026 (checked October 2026): adult 10-year passport $422, child 5-year passport $213. | ||||

Two paid services shorten the wait. Fast Track is up to 14 business days end to end: up to 4 days to reach the office, 5 to process and up to 5 to post. It costs the standard fee plus $107 (checked October 2026). Priority is up to 11 business days end to end: up to 4 days to reach the office, 2 to process and up to 5 to post. It costs the standard fee plus $308 (checked October 2026).
The short labels mislead people. The office describes Fast Track as 5-day processing and Priority as 2-day processing, and those processing times exclude postage and delivery. Priority does not put a passport in your hand two days after you lodge.
As for the base cost, as of 1 January 2026 an adult 10-year passport is $422 and a child 5-year passport is $213 (checked October 2026). Fast Track and Priority are added to the standard fee. By our sum, an adult pays $529 in total with Fast Track and $730 with Priority (checked October 2026).
When is it too late for each? Our estimate, counting Monday to Friday back from Friday 18 December:
- Fast Track: 14 business days back lands on Monday 30 November 2026.
- Priority: 11 business days back lands on Thursday 3 December 2026.
Like the routine date, both are zero-buffer dates built on "up to" figures, so earlier is better.
Three things can help at the edges:
- Lodge in the morning. At a selected Australia Post Passport RAPID location, for an additional fee, if you lodge before 12:00 pm on a business day the office receives it the same day. After 12:00 pm, or on a weekend, it arrives the next business day.
- Upgrade after lodging. Faster processing can be requested after lodging a routine application by contacting the Passport Office.
- Collect in person to take the posting leg out of the picture, if you asked for collection when you lodged.
Not everyone can pay to go faster. You are not eligible if you are applying from outside Australia, have difficulty proving identity, are applying for a child passport without full parental consent, or have had 2 or more passports lost or stolen in the last 5 years.
For a real emergency there is another route. For compassionate or compelling urgent travel, call 131 232 for an appointment and bring evidence. Passport offices don't accept cash, only EFTPOS, MasterCard or Visa.
Can I book flights before the new passport arrives?
Renewing does not leave you with a spare passport: your current one will generally be cancelled when you lodge the application, so you can't use it for travel or identification while the new one is made.
Any time left on the old passport is lost too. Remaining validity doesn't carry over, and the new passport is valid from its issue date. The office also advises against travelling outside Australia while a renewal is processing, because you could be stranded overseas with a cancelled passport. If you have a trip before Christmas, finish it before you lodge.
Booking early is a separate question. When the new passport is issued, the passport number changes, and the office says to make sure travel bookings and visa applications use the new passport's details.
Our view at Travel Times is to lodge first and book second wherever the timing allows. If a fare won't wait, book it knowing the passport number will need updating. Before you pay, ask the airline or your agent how that update is done. Hold any visa application until the new number is in your hand.
Renewal, first passport or child: what to line up before you lodge
Before you lodge
Renewing (only if you meet all renewal conditions)
First adult passport
Child
The fastest application is the one that doesn't come back for more paperwork. What you need depends on which of three groups you fall into.
Renewing an adult passport. You can renew only if your passport was issued at age 16 or over, on or after 1 January 2006, with at least 2 years' validity. It must also show your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender, must not be reported lost, stolen or cancelled, and must be presented at lodgement. If you qualify, renewals need no referee or guarantor.
First adult passport. You need a referee (online form) or guarantor (paper form). That person must be an adult Australian citizen who has known you for more than a year, and cannot be a relative, partner or housemate. Lodgement is at a participating post office. Find your person now, not in the week you lodge.
Children. Child passports need a guarantor who is not a parent. Full parental consent, or a relevant court order, is needed for standard timeframes, and children aged 10 or older must also sign the form. Consent signatures need a witness over 18. A child aged 16 or 17 must come in person to lodge.
Validity differs by age. Passports for children aged 0 to 15 are valid up to 5 years, and for 16 and 17-year-olds up to 10 years. Check each child's expiry date as well as your own.
Other checks before you fly overseas these holidays
Before you fly
A passport that arrives on time can still fall short at the border. Smartraveller's checklist says to confirm your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of your trip, and check visa needs for destinations and transit countries.
Six months is not a universal rule. It matters because some countries refuse entry if the passport expires in 6 months or less, and some want 2 to 4 blank pages. Your destination's own entry rules settle it. Smartraveller also says to use passports.gov.au only, because scam sites exist.
If your route connects through the Middle East, our guide to how Smartraveller's advice levels affect your cover covers what the levels mean for transit.
Conditions at the other end are worth a look too. Smartraveller's El Niño item (updated 20 October 2026) reports severe flooding and super typhoons in parts of Asia, and wildfire smoke affecting air quality in Malaysia and Singapore, with a WMO prediction that the event lasts into early 2027.

Here is the whole plan in one place. For a routine application, allow at least six weeks from lodging and paying. Complex ones, such as a child's without full parental consent, can take longer. If the routine date has gone, check whether you are eligible for Fast Track or Priority. If you are renewing, expect your old passport to be cancelled the day you lodge. When the new one arrives, put its new number on your bookings and visa applications.
Your next step
Lodge the application first. Once you have the receipt, start planning the trip itself. Our destination guides for Australia and Africa are a good place to begin.
